Worth a stopover between Rio and Sao Paulo”
I came in at night from Sao Paulo. Hostel was a bit outside the town center, it was only a 10-minute walk from the bus station and not that difficult to find even at night. Staff were very friendly and helpful and spoke fluent Spanish (which was better for my broken Spanish than my non-existent Portuguese). Got a whole room to myself but paid only around $40, because it wasn't peak season. Cool bar across the street on the beach. Same place where I had the complimentary breakfast the next day. In the morning, I left my stuff and rented a safety deposit box (you basically buy the padlock from them and the box is free to use). I walked around town all day and then came back for my stuff to catch the bus onward to Rio. Very pretty churches and town. Beach was ok but having the town as a backdrop made it better. I didn't head out to any of the nearby islands, which I heard had better beaches. All in all, still worth a stopover between Sao Paulo and Rio if you have an extra day.
